Paul articulates a very practical theology of the body in chapters 5 and 6, asking the church to honor God with our bodies. This is God’s plan – to redeem his entire creation – including the physical.
Friends of Jesus,
In chapters 5 and 6, Paul focuses on the importance of purity in the Body – pointing out the error of the Greek philosophers – of trying to separate what is holy from what is secular.
This section of his letter finishes with a clear summary: Therefore honor God with your bodies.
God made us as integrated creatures – body, soul and spirit, and he has appointed us to a destiny of total redemption including the resurrection of our bodies.
Gordon Fee’s commentary says it this way (page 266):
“Sexual immorality is still sin, even though it has been justified under every conceivable rationalization. Those who take Scripture seriously are not prudes or legalists at this point; rather, they recognize that God has purchased us for higher things. Our bodies belong to God through the redemption of the cross; and they are destined for resurrection. Part of the reason why Christians flee sexual immorality is that their bodies are for the Lord, who is to be honored in the deeds of the body as well as in all other behavior and attitudes.”
Since what we do with our body really matters to Jesus, how can we apply this truth to our eating, exercise, rest, and sexual purity this week?
Think of it this way: How can I love Jesus this week by caring for the body he gave me?
