SHAPING – Needy (Week Ten)

Grow October 15, 2015

MID-WEEK

Last week: Don’t be greedy.
This week: Be merciful.

Friends

The parable Jesus teaches in Luke 12:13-21 is a wake up call for any of us shaped by the American Dream. (Part of the problem is that the American Dream has shifted quite a bit in the past 239 years.)

Watching part of a baseball game yesterday, I saw several commercials for products and services. The overarching message was “get set so you can relax and do what you want.”

This approach promotes hoarding and lust for comfort. These are manifestations of greed – which is an ever-present danger in our culture – a danger for each of us.

Like the rich fool filling his new barns, the rich fool forgets the fact that he has no idea how long he will live. The fool trusts in his hoarded wealth more than he trusts the God who created him.

If you missed, get the CD or listen to Michael Beausejour’s message on-line. It will challenge and encourage you from greed to Kingdom generosity.

We are invited by God to trust and rest in him alone. This takes active effort to listen, trust, surrender, and make decisions for his Kingdom and his glory.

As Michael testified, the true antidote for greed is to discover the joy of generosity and trusting our futures to him alone.

Said another way, generosity gobbles greed. That’s a good focus for each one of us as we enter the Thanksgiving season!

In the Generosity of Jesus with you, Denis

MID-WEEK

Last Sunday: Return to me fully.
This Sunday: It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Brothers and Sisters

I was so encouraged by your amazing generosity toward Moran and the Hope for Israel ministry! Our love offering was $12,600 – what a great investment for our L-1233 accounts!

This is a fantastic segue into the final section of our journey in the commands of Jesus, where we will explore the outrageous generosity of our Messiah.

My key personal objective and prayer for the next several weeks is for each of us to grasp the extreme giving nature of our God.

I want us to experience deep in our hearts that God so loved the world he GAVE. God kept nothing in reserve, held nothing back. He did not grab onto his position and privilege!

Jesus left the adoration and perfection of heaven to become one of us. The King jumped into the sewer to rescue the ones who rejected, ignored and killed him!

This is the nature of God – a generous Father, a giving Messiah (down to the last drop of blood) and a gift-endowing Holy Spirit.

Let’s get ready for the thrill of a lifetime – to embrace the generosity of God and then release ourselves fully into his trust, vision and purposes!

My prayer for this series: a Church totally consecrated to give 100% for the God who only gives 100%.

In the Generosity of Jesus with you, Denis

MID-WEEK

Last Sunday: It is more blessed to give!
This Sunday: Don’t be envious or compare!

Beloved Church

When I consider the cost of what Jesus did for me on the Cross, I am brought to tears. The sheer passion of his love sets my heart on fire.

I realized many years ago on a hillside in China that the Love of Jesus for me – in the face of my sin and wickedness – was a Love that deserves my all.

I want to spend the rest of my life helping others to see this truth – so that Jesus might receive the full reward for his suffering.

Like Abraham, who was blessed in order to be a blessing to others, we who know Jesus have been blessed to give – to walk out the same love by living and sharing the Good News of Jesus with others.

We have literally been blessed to give. May we see the many facets of Love and generosity as we finish our study in the commands of Jesus. May we be transformed by the perfect Love of Jesus.

My prayer for this series continues: that we’d be a Church totally consecrated to give 100% for the God who only gives 100%.

In the Generosity of Jesus with you, Denis

MID-WEEK

Last Week: Do not envy.
This Week: Don’t be greedy.

Brothers and Sisters

It was fun to look at Jesus’ parable of the workers in the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16) with a fresh eye last Sunday.

I’m challenged by how Jesus always gets to the underlying attitudes and the real condition of my heart.

His teaching is challenging, but if I let him in – he always leaves me changed, healed, refreshed.

The enemy wants me to believe its better not to tread on sensitive subjects, but Jesus wants to redeem and heal every part of me.

I’m grateful he got into the motives for my service to him and his people. If I cultivate gratitude, I’m really eager to serve. If not, I’m always stingy and self-preservation wins.

Try this with me – ask Jesus every day this week: how do you want me to use my time, treasure and talent for your glory today?

I’m trying to walk in a mindset of serving, and praying for MCC to become even more a culture of serving – anchored in gratitude for the Gospel.

Anytime I grumble, it’s a sign that I really haven’t surrendered to Jesus and his Lordship in my life.

My prayer for this series continues: that we’d be a Church totally consecrated to give 100% for the God who only gives 100%.

MID-WEEKLast Sunday: Be ready for my return!
This Sunday: Guest Moran Rosenblit

Brothers and Sisters

I have four quick updates today:

1. A reflection on a great message by Pastor Tracy Ventus
2. Welcoming our newest staff member, Mark Simes
3. A love offering Sunday for our special Israeli guest
4. Introducing you to our latest new members

1. Pastor Ventus’ message on being ready for the return of Jesus was titled “Ready or not Here Christ Comes”. He encouraged us to remember that this world is not our home but our assignment.

That brings ultimate focus on living for Jesus now, which turns out to be the central thought in his commands about Generosity: use everything for the Kingdom and for my glory!

2. Please welcome our new Director of Ministry, Mark Simes. Mark will start at MCC on October 19. He and his wife, Holly, currently attend Hope Church in Mason. They have two sons, one recently married. Please pray for their transition and ministry here.

Mark had a successful career in R&D at P&G and also served as executive leader of American Heritage Girls. He was the leader of Men’s Ministry at Hope Church for 15 years, and Holly served in the Women’s Ministry. Their experience and gifting will be a blessing to our congregation!

3. Moran Rosenblit will be speaking Sunday. He leads a ministry called Hope4Israel and will encourage us from the Word of God. We will take a love offering to support this ministry.

Hope4Israel is also the operator for our Israel tour. I will give a briefing Sunday for all those who may be interested in our discipleship trip to the Holy Land April 1-12 2016.

4. We welcomed 12 new members last Sunday:

Dan and Bethany Bauer
Tim and Stacey Bon
Chuck and Katie Dokmo
Ben and Lynn Huizenga
Tamala Russell
Donna “Naj” Stevens
Mark and Christine Wavle

If you want to learn more about membership, contact stacey@mariemontchurch.org – our next new members seminar is on Saturday October 10 from 8 am to noon – child care provided!

Following Jesus with you, Denis

MID-WEEK

Last Sunday: Hold on to what you have.
Next Sunday: Listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.

Beloved

I hope you were encouraged with the amazing testimonies of God’s answers to our prayers that were shared last Sunday.

There were amazing testimonies of new jobs, the love of our community during a time of sickness and need, a refreshed marriage, favor, a medically documented healing, just to name a few.

God is faithful. He responds to our prayers. Perhaps not as fast as we would like. Perhaps not exactly how we would like. But Jesus says hold on! When we hold on to Jesus, we will not be disappointed!

This Sunday we will look at Jesus’ command to the seven Asian churches in Revelation 2-3, charging those churches then – and charging us now – to Listen to what the Spirit is saying.

This will be a special Sunday of worship, communion, of considering the days we are in, and of a timely message on what the Spirit of God is saying to the church.

Also, we will have our second monthly “Concert of Prayer” walk in Madisonville Sunday from 130-230 PM, as we partner with New Mission Church to pray the Kingdom into our community.

I encourage everyone to read Revelation 2-3 in preparation for Sunday. May we be ready to Hold On in worship and hungry to hear his voice as the Spirit speaks to the church.

Needy before Jesus with you, Denis
