MID-WEEK

Love is the most excellent way.

The greatest of all virtues is love.

Follow the way of love.
Miss a service? Listen to the Podcast on the homepage. Come back in 1-2 days if last Sunday’s is not up yet.

Beloved,

I’m so thankful for Mike Cambron’s message on the supremacy of love from 1 Corinthians Chapter 13.

What a vivid and compelling reminder at a time of growing unrest and hatred around us.

I’m so glad we don’t have to muster this love ourselves, but that in Jesus, we have the very love for him that the Father has! (John 17:26)

May this love flow from us to all those around us.

In the life and love of Jesus with you, Denis

Do you know you are a gift to all of us at MCC?

We cannot be all we are destined to be unless you know, develop and use your gifts!

May you know the thrill of God’s design and destiny for your life!

Miss a service? Listen to the Podcast. Come back in 1-2 days if last Sunday’s is not up yet.

Gifted Ones,

I’m excited to see how God will lead us all to seek the greater gifts and to use our gifts more fully for his glory.

I love that the Father, the Son and the Spirit have worked together to give the church all we need to bring the Kingdom of God to the earth.

In Romans 12, God the Father gives the gifts of faith, prophecy, serving, teaching, encouragement, giving, leadership and mercy.

In Ephesians 4, Jesus gives us apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds or pastors, and teachers.

In 1 Corinthians 12, the Holy Spirit gives messages of knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, tongues or languages, and interpretation of tongues.

There is overlap in these lists of gifts, and there are others mentioned elsewhere – but isn’t it a great comfort that we have been blessed by God in these ways?

Let’s be thankful and generously use what God has given to us for his glory!

In the life and love of Jesus with you, Denis

MID-WEEK

Paul was simply astonished by the selfishness of the Corinthians.

How would Paul experience the lifestyle of our church if he visited MCC?

Friends of Jesus,

The church in Corinth amazed Paul with their selfishness. They were in disarray!

They had gender role confusion, factions, and unworthy communion celebrations.

It was so bad that some people were getting sick and even put to death by God’s judgment.

May we have the attitude of Jesus, who did not count equality with God as something to be used to his own advantage.

Rather he made himself nothing. A servant.

May we have the humility of Jesus and walk together in good order and care for one another.

In the humility of Jesus with you, Denis

Rest is one of the main promises of a life lived with Jesus.

Jesus gives us rest …

from striving,
from fear, and
from religion.

Do you know God’s rest?

Miss a service? Listen to the Podcast. Come back in 1-2 days if last Sunday’s is not up yet.

Beloved Congregation,

I’m so grateful for the ministry of Ofer Amitai and his six messages related to the Feast of Tabernacles this past weekend:

1. The meaning of the Feast established in Leviticus 23: a summons from God to be refreshed as we remember the past, celebrate the present and anticipate his return. (true for Sundays as well!)

2. The way home begins with the Law, starting with Genesis 3: we must know the purpose of the Law and our true state before a holy God!

3. Grace comes to rescue us from our true condition under the Law – and we all need grace – as in the parable of the lost sons in Luke 15.

4. Once rescued we need to learn to fight the battle with our flesh by the power of the Holy Spirit, based in some of Paul’s deepest teaching in Romans 8.

5. The life we have in the Spirit opens the possibility of a life anchored in persevering prayer, based on the parable of Jesus in Luke 18.

6. We bring this life with Jesus into a world turned upside down and despite all evil around us, we sing to the Lord. The message from Habakkuk may be our best election advice!

If you missed the weekend, these 6 message CD’s are available at the Connect Desk for your encouragement – they are also on line.

In the Rest of Jesus with you, Denis

Freedom is a beautiful gift that is never free. Having been ransomed by Jesus at great cost, he wants us to use our freedom the way he did.

So let’s not hang onto our freedom for ourselves but use it for the benefit of others!

Miss a service? Listen to the Podcast. Come back in 1-2 days if last Sunday’s is not up yet.

Brothers and Sisters,

I’m so grateful for the grace and truth that comes with Jesus Messiah. Even when he brings conviction, it is never to condemn but always to grow and bless us.

It is so important to remain open and hungry for more, and I find what is most crucial is to always remind ourselves that God is Good.

The lesson of the superiority of love over freedom is a major theme of Paul’s letter, and he will hit it hard again in Chapter 13. We need to always ask – what is the loving thing to do?

One increasingly common situation that I’m being asked about is when we are invited to a same-sex wedding. How do we love well?

This will be different for each of us and each situation. How well do we know the person? Do they know us?

Do we know their spiritual story? Have we shared our story and the gospel with them? What is the tone of our response?

The Lord will direct us by his Spirit, and it’s good to know that he wants us to love well. There is no “one size fits all” answer.

Putting our freedom and our rights aside for the benefit of others is often hard, but it is the way to a harvest of righteousness!

In The Way of Jesus with you, Denis

Idols crop up in subtle and sneaky ways in our lives. Paul wants us to eschew and put away every idol!

On top of that, he wants us to be careful that our freedom does not result in choices that cause others to stumble!
Miss a service? Listen to the Podcast. Come back in 1-2 days if last Sunday’s is not up yet.

Beloved,

Last Sunday, Louis Arnold helped us explore how idols can creep into our lives through many common daily activities in our culture.

We were made to worship. It’s amazing how often we take even good things like marriage, family, and ministry and begin to worship them!

I recall realizing that statues of Buddha acquired in Asia needed to be thrown out. I also realized that some items like native masks were likely associated with witch doctors!

It felt wasteful to throw them away. Also, getting rid of televisions was at first hard, but how freeing to only have one and use it sparingly!

Additionally, our choices, even choices in good conscience, can affect others negatively, causing them to stumble.

For example, there is nothing wrong with a believer having a glass of wine. But in the presence of an alcoholic, it may bring their failure.

How do our choices affect others? How do our lifestyles affect the unbelievers around us?

May we apply Paul’s challenging teaching with wisdom and grace!

Paul wants us to be content in our present circumstances so we can focus on Jesus and his Kingdom.

Is this a reality in your life? Where is God leading you so that this will be true of you and your family?

Brothers and Sisters,

Paul spends time on important marital teaching in Chapter 7 but his focus is in helping the church live for Jesus and his Kingdom.

The wonderful thing is that as we focus on Jesus, our marriages improve dramatically. We are more oriented to serving and yielding to our spouse, and as we mature, our hearts are purified and healed of our past sin and hurts.

The same is true for the singles who focus on Jesus. An intimate life with Jesus brings us into greater awareness of the Kingdom and the opportunities to bring God glory.

And as Paul elaborates in verses 29-31, keeping a perspective on the fact that this world is passing away helps us all live with greater freedom and joy! That is a game-changer!

So we can do what is best for all of us: “live in a right way with undivided devotion to the Lord”.

By the way, I quoted John Piper twice yesterday, you may be encouraged by looking at his entire article:

Paul spends a great deal of time outlining the heart of leadership in the community of Jesus. He gently identifies the criteria for leaders and also shares his heart for the people he shepherds. He helps us know how to follow well.

Brothers and Sisters,

Paul is a man seeking to lead the way Jesus leads. He is gently and yet firmly helping this church grow.

He is not defending himself, and yet with care, he is asking the church to learn what a good leader looks like.

This helps everyone grow into their role in the Kingdom, leading with the same principles Jesus wants.

May we follow well and lead well in our respective responsibilities in the Body of Christ.

How will you step into and apply this teaching?

MID-WEEK

Jesus is the Life that is truly life.

Let’s not accept anything other than the real thing!

Brothers and Sisters,

We’ve spent 10 weeks considering the wisdom given to us in the book of Proverbs. We’ve asked God to show us how to do life well.

Sunday, I shared revelation the Lord had given to me about the uniqueness and excellencies of Jesus found in Proverbs, starting with verse 30:4-

Who has gone up to heaven and come down?
Whose hands have gathered up the wind?
Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and
What is the name of his son?
Tell me if you know!

As I traced through Proverbs, I saw a theme of life and of the ways to life. Three pictures stood out:

The path of life (2:19, 12:28, 15:24)
The fountain of life (10:11, 13:14, 14:27, 16:22)
The tree of life (3:18, 11:30, 13:12, 15:4)

I made the case that these are pictures of Jesus, fully revealed through the Gospels and the rest of the New Testament.

Let’s share his name and his Good News with all those we know, for the glory of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Learning to live and love in Jesus with you,

Denis

Speaking of opportunities, men, please email Rob Seetin about participating in this Saturday’s men’s event, come and start some new friendships!
